Participation in SATRN
SATRN is committed that everybody involved, member or non-member, receive value from their participation. This page is designed to assist you in achieving maximum benefit from your involvement with SATRN.
1. Become a Member
SATRN Members are provided information and opportunities that non-members are not.
2. Get Involved
When you choose to participate, others will notice your visibility and commitment. Ultimately it will make you more approachable, and a sought-after resource.
3. Show Up Early, Stay Late, and Come Prepared to Network
Take some extra time at each meeting to get to know the other people who participate. Bring your business cards and a smile. Always offer two business cards, one for your new acquaintance and one for their files - or a friend.
4. Listen Intently
Really focus on what the other person has to say. Remember the ears to mouth ratio - you should listen twice as much as you speak.
5. Play a Big Game
Before the meeting, decide how many new people you will meet. Force yourself to work the room. Think about the type of people you'd like to know, and seek them out at the meeting.
6. Start the Dialogue
The main reason people don't network is fear. Chances are the person you're talking to is more afraid of you, than you are of them! Be the one to initiate a conversation. A simple icebreaker like I haven't seen you here before, my name is Jim," may be just the thing it takes to get a friendship started.
7. Think Long Term
Ask what value you bring to the conversation, and what value that person brings to you. The worst thing you can do is sell to somebody you've just met. Develop the relationship first. Be willing to contribute.
8. Follow Up
Keep files on all of your contacts, and be sure to keep in touch.
9. Wear Your Nametag
Make it easy for people to approach you. Placing your nametag in a visible spot on your left-hand side will allow people to remember your name while they shake your hand. Don't forget to move your name tag if you put on or take off a jacket or sweater.
10. Discuss Something Other Than Business
Even though SATRN is a professional organization, conversations can (and often should) relate to things outside the workplace. Family life, recreation, and current events are all fair game in a conversation.
11. Most Importantly - Be Yourself
You won't be all things for all people, so just authentically be who you are.
